Your Scar Tissue Massage Consultation
Scars are always considered and included as part of Myofascial Therapy sessions.
But to support more complex or recent scars I offer a dedicated Scar Tissue Massage Consultation. This captures all the information about you, your surgery and your scar tht will help guide the sessions.
Your first consultation will give you the time & space to tell me about your scar including how it may be affecting you and any treatment goals you may have.
This process will be led by you. The time remaining after your consultation will then be available for us to begin the assessment and hands on work on your scar, or the first scar of choice.
Working together you will be encouraged to provide feedback to help guide the sessions content and pace.

Frequently asked questions about Scar Tissue Massage
What is scar tissue?
Scar tissue is a normal and natural repair process that occurs as a result of injury or surgery.
Scar tissue may be less flexible, weaker, thicker, a different colour and produce different sensations or no sensations at all.
Although scar tissue is different from surrounding tissue it doesn't necessarily mean it will cause restrictions or unwanted symptoms.
That said, when tissue is cut or interrupted so are the nerves and that can change how things feel.
Why have scar tissue massage?
Tissue repairs in a haphazard arrangement, and sometimes overproduction of the collagen fibres can create thickened or less mobile tissue.
Some people experience feelings of perceived pain, numbness, burning, itching, tightness, restriction, pulling, swelling and a sense of disconnection from affected areas of the body as a result.
Are we breaking up scar tissue in scar massage?
No. As with Myofascial Therapy we cannot "break up" or "release" scar tissue with our hands, nor would we want to.
But, by using specific massage techniques we can stimulate peripheral nerves, mobilise the scar and the surrounding tissue, which can help with tissue organisation, stretch, flexibility and sensitivity.
Scar tissue healing times
Scar healing has several phases; the remodelling phase begins from week 6 and can continue for anything up to 2 years as the new tissue reorganises and strengthens.
Certain types of therapeutic touch around scarring (not on it) can begin as early as 2 weeks post-surgery.
Direct work on the scar must wait until the proliferation stage. Providing there are no healing delays this happens 6-9 weeks post surgery.
How many scar tissue sessions will I need?
Whilst there is no set number of sessions for scar massage and one-off sessions can be useful, it's worth being able to commit to anything from 2- 6 sessions before you start.
If multiple or very large scars have been discussed in the consultation it will be necessary to treat over multiple sessions.
What will you be assessing?
During a scar tissue assessment we will look at how the scar itself and any suppounding areas feel before and during touch.
We will assess how the scar tissue and surrounding areas move and any wider effect that may have on your posture or symptoms.
What will scar tissue massage feel like?
Sensations felt during scar massage differ from person to person, but as scar tissue massage and Myofascial techniques are so gentle and also led by you as the client, the treatments are typically quite relaxing.
